a short history

From 1855 until the 1930s, there were a number of small foods processing and wholesaling enterprises in the Cove. Factories producing jams, fruit, pulp, bread, butter and flour mingled their rich smells with the salty sea air. Some shopkeepers also lived on their premises like John Callaghan’s family, whose business premises and home was next door to R.R Rex’s Chandlery in Morrison Street. The Callaghan’s business which was operating as Callaghan’s Butchery is today known as Harbour Lights Café and has been owned by Robert Marino since 1997.
